Hate world cup but Morocco’s wins show something

Even I reacted on seeing lovely pictures of the Moroccan team running to their mothers to celebrate wins, making sajda (prostrating) to Allah (swt), reciting Sura Fatiha before that penalty shootout against Spain and chanting for Palestine at the Qatar world cup.

As an ummah, these are our values. No wonder Muslims all over the world are proud of the Moroccan football team. The support they are getting from Muslims everywhere shows the ummah feels as one.

European nations do not support each other in the same way because of the long-standing divisions and nationalism between them.

In the Muslim lands, nationalism is on the retreat as the deep Islamic feeling surfaces and Muslims increasingly identify as one ummah. This is despite the borders Muslim leaders seek to maintain.

Ummah’s joy

My social media feeds exploded after Morocco’s win over Spain. Now they’ve beat Portugal, many Muslims are over joyed.

History and politics surfaced as well

Outside the stadium a drummer led fans in a chant of "Go, go, go" before they sang "Al-Andalus al-Andalus" - the name of the historic Muslim state once ruling Spain and Portugal, the two teams Morocco has now knocked out.

Muslims remember Islamic rule over Iberia and a lot of tweets after the win over Spain were about Tariq Ibn Ziyad and Al-Andalus :) . Some of the social media messages included:

*Al-Andalus is coming back
*The Arabs are once again masters of the Iberian Peninsula

*Morocco knocking off the colonialists one by one. Next one England or France
*The total population of Morocco suddenly grew by 1.6 billion

Some messages are overblown. After all, this is only a win on the football field. However, the comments show an awareness and identification with Islamic history and a desire for Muslims to win off the football field.

Imagine our future

Imagine if the youth of Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Pakistan and Indonesia lived in one Islamic Khilafah state where even half of the $220 billion used on the world cup was spent on building world class factories, hospitals, military and public infrastructure?

That would be a real victory for the ummah and our youth wouldn’t have to flee to Europe on dangerous boat journeys in order to get jobs to survive - after being made poor by the Moroccan king and other so called Muslim rulers who misuse our wealth.

Our challenge

Going forward, our challenge is to convert these wonderful Islamic thoughts and feelings we are witnessing so we harness them for the real work to unite the ummah and re-establish the Islamic Khilafah state that implements the guidance sent by Allah (swt).

Then, the Islamic civilisation will once again exist and be an example for the rest of the world.
